Estimate Your Body Fat Percentage

BMI is flawed because it cannot tell the difference between fat and muscle. To get a true picture of your health, you need to know your body composition. Our Body Fat Calculator utilizes the U.S. Navy standard tape measure method to estimate your fat percentage without expensive clinical scans.

How the US Navy Method Works

The military requires a fast, low-cost way to assess the fitness of thousands of recruits. They developed a formula based on tape measurements of specific body circumferences:

  • Neck Circumference Measured just below the larynx (Adam's apple). A thicker neck generally correlates with higher muscle mass and frame size.
  • Waist Circumference Measured exactly at the navel for men, or at the narrowest point of the abdomen for women. This measures dangerous visceral belly fat.
  • Hip Circumference (Women Only) Measured at the widest point of the hips/buttocks. Biological differences mean women naturally store more subcutaneous fat in the lower body.
  • The Calculation The formula compares the ratio of your waist/hips (fat storage areas) against your neck/height (frame size indicators) to estimate total fat percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the tape measure method?

The US Navy method is generally accurate within 3% to 4% of clinical DEXA scans. It is highly effective for tracking your own progress over time, provided you measure at the exact same spots consistently.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 'fitness' levels are typically 14-17%, and 'acceptable' is 18-24%. For women, 'fitness' is 21-24%, and 'acceptable' is 25-31%. Women biologically require higher body fat for reproductive health.

Are smart scales (bioelectrical impedance) more accurate?

Not necessarily. Consumer smart scales send a mild electrical current through your legs. They are heavily influenced by your hydration levels—drinking a large glass of water can wildly change your 'body fat' reading on a scale.
