What are Macros?

"Macros" is short for macronutrients. These are the three primary components of food that provide energy (calories) to your body:

  • Protein (4 calories per gram): Essential for building and repairing muscle tissue.
  • Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram): Your body's primary and most efficient energy source.
  • Fats (9 calories per gram): Crucial for hormone production and nutrient absorption.

Why track Macros instead of just Calories?

While total calories determine whether you gain or lose weight, your macro ratio determines what kind of weight you lose or gain. A high-protein macro split ensures that weight lost is primarily fat rather than muscle.

Optimize Your Diet Composition

Calories dictate whether your weight on the scale goes up or down. But Macronutrients (Macros) dictate whether that weight is fat or muscle. Our Macro Calculator takes your calorie goal and divides it into the optimal ratio of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates based on your specific fitness goals.

The Function of the Three Macros

Every diet (Keto, Paleo, Vegan) is simply a manipulation of these three energy sources:

Frequently Asked Questions

How much protein do I actually need?

For optimal muscle growth (hypertrophy) and preservation during fat loss, science heavily supports consuming 0.8 to 1.0 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight. Eating significantly more than this offers no extra muscle-building benefit.

Do carbs make you fat?

No. Carbs do not uniquely cause fat gain. Only a surplus of total calories causes fat gain. However, carbs do cause your body to retain water (every gram of glycogen stores 3 grams of water), which is why cutting carbs results in rapid, temporary 'water weight' loss on the scale.

What is the Keto macro split?

The Ketogenic diet forces the body to run on fat instead of carbs. The standard Keto macro split is roughly 70% Fat, 25% Protein, and only 5% Carbohydrates (usually under 20g-30g of net carbs per day).
