The Two Types of PDF Passwords
The PDF standard supports two completely different layers of security, and it is vital to know which one you are applying:
- The User Password (Open Password): This is the ultimate lockdown. The file itself is fully encrypted. When someone double-clicks the PDF, they are immediately met with a blank gray screen and a prompt. If they do not have the password, they cannot see a single pixel of the document.
- The Owner Password (Permissions): This does not encrypt the file; anyone can open and read it. However, it locks specific features. You can set an Owner Password to prevent people from printing the document, copying text to their clipboard, or using tools to edit the pages.
- The Cryptographic Standard: Modern PDFs use AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with 128-bit or 256-bit keys. This is the exact same encryption standard used by banks and the US Government. It cannot be 'hacked' or brute-forced in any reasonable human timeframe.

Security tools must be private. Our tool uses WebAssembly to execute the AES encryption algorithm entirely within your local browser's memory. The unencrypted version of your document never leaves your computer.
Can someone easily bypass an 'Owner (Permissions)' password?
Yes. While it stops casual users from clicking 'Print', determined users can bypass permissions passwords using various online unlocker tools, or simply take a screenshot of the page. If the data is truly sensitive, you must use a 'User (Open)' password to encrypt the entire file.
