How Sharpening Algorithms Work
It is important to understand that sharpening tools do not actually 'add' detail that wasn't there; they trick the human eye using contrast:
- Unsharp Masking: The industry-standard technique. The algorithm finds the edges in your photo (where a light pixel meets a dark pixel) and makes the light side slightly lighter and the dark side slightly darker. This heightened contrast makes the edge look razor-sharp.
- The Halo Effect (Over-sharpening): If you push the sharpening slider too high, those high-contrast edges will begin to glow, creating ugly white 'halos' around subjects. Always apply sharpening subtly.
- Noise Amplification: Sharpening does not distinguish between a deliberate edge and random digital noise. If you have a grainy photo taken in the dark, sharpening it will make the grain look significantly worse.

Can this fix a completely out-of-focus photo?
No. Standard sharpening tools are designed to fix slight softness or lens blur. If the photo is completely blurred out (bokeh) because the camera focused on the wrong subject, no software can mathematically reconstruct the lost data.
Why does my sharpened image look grainy?
Because sharpening increases micro-contrast, it amplifies JPEG compression artifacts and digital sensor noise. Always try to sharpen the original, highest-resolution version of the file you have.
