When Can You Retire?
The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement is a financial strategy based on aggressive saving and low-cost index fund investing. Our FIRE Calculator helps you determine exactly what your "FI Number" is, and how many years it will take to reach it based on your current savings rate.
The Core Rules of FIRE
The math behind early retirement isn't based on your salary; it is based entirely on your Savings Rate. If you save 50% of your income, you buy one year of freedom for every year you work. The movement relies on two mathematical pillars:
- The 4% Rule (Safe Withdrawal Rate) Based on the Trinity Study, if you invest your money in a diversified portfolio (stocks/bonds), you can safely withdraw 4% of the initial balance every year, adjusted for inflation, without ever running out of money.
- The Rule of 25 (Your FI Number) To figure out exactly how much money you need to retire forever, simply take your estimated annual expenses in retirement and multiply by 25. (e.g., $40,000/year x 25 = $1,000,000).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 'Lean FIRE' vs 'Fat FIRE'?
'Lean FIRE' is retiring on a minimalist budget (e.g., $30,000/year) requiring a smaller portfolio. 'Fat FIRE' is retiring with a luxurious budget (e.g., $100,000+/year) requiring a massive $2.5M+ portfolio.
Does the 4% rule still work?
The 4% rule was designed for a standard 30-year retirement. Because early retirees might be retired for 50+ years, many conservative FIRE adherents prefer a 3.5% or 3% safe withdrawal rate.
Do I have to quit working?
No! 'Financial Independence' is the goal. Once you hit your FI Number, working becomes optional. Many in the FIRE community transition to lower-stress, lower-paying passion jobs ('Barista FIRE').
